Pod Coffee Machines

As part of the information we thought our readers would find useful, we have included this article on the five best pod coffee machines using the Nescafe system and that of course can be used to make your Chococino hot chocolate drink.

We wanted to provide you with a fair review of these brewers so you could make an informed choice if you were thinking of purchasing one at some point. We have tried to provide a balanced review where we consider the positive and negative of each brewer so you can see which will suit your needs, including the pressure on your wallet.

We would like to be up front about the links on this page, which will take you through to Amazon.com for further price and product information. We do earn a small commission (normally around 4%) from any sales that are made. This is at no cost to you of course as any commissions are paid directly from Amazon. Any earnings do help us offset the costs of this site, including annual domain registration and monthly web hosting. We wanted you to know about this as we don’t appreciate sites that try and hide this in the small print or don’t tell their readers at all.

The Picolo is excellent value from Amazon.com at the moment with a massive 64% savings off the recommended retail price. Including free shipping, the Picolo is only $49.85 making our pick for value for money for these single cup coffee brewers.

Description:

This is the lowest priced of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto single serve coffee makes and while its core functions are the same as the other four models, it does suffer a little on the cosmetic look side of things. The whole unit is plastic and it certainly has the plastic type feel, but it otherwise works just fine.Like all coffee brewers it does need to be descaled once in a while, we recommend about every three months or so, but the process is quite painless and its something you have to do no mater what type of unit you purchase. It certainly does help keep up the maintenance and helps the coffee to taste fresher than if you left if without cleaning for a long timeThe coffee produced by the Piccolo is good, we certainly had no complains with the one we have tried. Like all other single serve coffee makers on the market, the Nescafe coffee pods need to be discarded upon use, on top of which, if you are brewing mocha and the like, you need to discard 2 (milk gets its own pod) for each cup of drink. Environmentally this isn’t the best, and hopefully we can come up with a better option at some point.

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio Coffeemaker

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio Coffeemaker

Features:

  • Easily prepares a variety of hot and cold drinks with the single serve system; produces gourmet coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, iced drinks and more

  • Quickly customize beverage strength and preparation with the 7-level LED display controls
  • No preheating required with special thermoblock heating system
  • Energy-saving automatic stand-by mode after 5-minute of inactivity

Price:

Amazon.com seems to be having bit of a sale with these brewers as we write these reviews as the Genio is also on sale with a very good 31% off (saving $56.29 off the recommended retail price). The current price is $125.71, with free shipping.

Description:

The Genio is a simple device, quick to master, easy to fill and to our eye rather more attractive machine in the kitchen when compared to the Piccolo mentioned above. The system is ready in a few seconds from switch-ON and makes a hot but not scalding cup in a matter of moments. The controls couldn’t be more self-evident and it even switches itself off after 5 minutes if you forget. As the water heats the green display lights gradually brighten – a nice touch that I find strangely appealing! On the downside the instructions from DeLonghi are rather poor and we feel the water tank is on the small side. But, other than that we couldn’t really say anything else negative about the brewer.Overall the Genio is a great little machine and well priced at the moment – it rather looks like a friendly Penguin in the kitchen. The box does come with a small selection of Dolce Gusto pods, which is nice to kick it off for you. But we had a box of the Chococino already and so went straight for these.

Price:

We feel at $178.99 Melody II is probably slightly over priced from Amazon.com when compared to the specials available for the Piccolo and the Genio. However it is a good machine and will produce a great cup of coffee for you.

Description:

The Melody II is very easy to set up and although feel a bit plastic it certainly isn’t flimsy. It has very basic functions and the instructions are much better with this unit when compared to the Genio. We do have some tips, which actually apply to most units that in particular will help you make a much better cup of coffee with the Melody II.Tip 1: warm the cup with boiling water before placing in the cup holder; this really helps you get a much hotter drink. It is bit of a pain but well worth it the extra few seconds it takes.Tip 2: make sure you use the recommended amount of water, if the instructions say to use 200ml of water for a certain flavor of coffee, then don’t fill a half litre mug as this will result it tasting rather  weak.Tip 3: no doubt about it, the thermoblock heater inside the machine just cannot maintain a high temperature for very long, but if you fill your cup in 10 second bursts rather than in a single burst you’ll get a HOT drink. i.e. move the heat selector switch to the middle after 10 seconds, then wait for the flashing red power light to turn green again before giving it another 10 second burst. This really makes a big difference.  For our liking the thermoblock heater is actually a bit under powered, but you can work around this. But overall a nice unit from Krups, but do shop around to see if you can get it bit cheaper.

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Circolo Coffeemaker

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Circolo Coffeemaker

Features:

  • Easily prepares a variety of hot and cold drinks with the single serve system; produces gourmet coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, iced drinks and more
  • Produces authentic espresso and the perfect cream with 15 bar pump pressure
  • Quickly customize beverage strength and preparation with the custom control lever
  • No preheating required with special thermoblock heating system
  • Energy-saving automatic stand-by mode after 20-minute of inactivity

Price:

An excellent price of $78.50 from Amazon.com makes the Circolo great value at the moment. This is a $71.45 or 48% savings off the list price and comes with free shipping.

Description:

Our overall experience with the Circolo was very good, with a good coffee produced each time. The temperature was consistent and the brewer is quick with little waiting time. Our only disappointment is it isn’t more automatic. It dispenses the water for as long or short a time as you want. Which once you get the hang of operating it this is quite nice, but when starting out it would be good to have an automatic option for a unit that is certainly not a entry level model. The good news is you get the feel for how strong or weak to make your coffee fairly quickly, the down side is you can’t leave it unattended. We have friends with a Tassimo style single-server coffeemaker, and we recently spent a weekend with them. This was our first hands-on experience with a single-serve coffeemaker. We enjoyed the convenience and variety of beverage options. Their Tassimo was automatic too; push the button and walk away. However the Circolo does work at 15 bar pressure is almost what professional coffee machines use. It works fast, from the moment you press the power button it takes about 30 seconds to have a finished drink. So overall it is a machine we can recommend and for its current selling price we feel it is the best placed in terms of value for money.

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Creativa Plus Coffeemaker

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Creativa Plus Coffeemaker

Features:

  • Easily prepares a variety of hot and cold drinks with the single serve system; produces gourmet coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, iced drinks and more

  • Quickly customize and memorize your favorite drinks with LCD screen
  • No preheating required with special thermoblock heating system
  • Energy-saving automatic stand-by mode after 5-minute of inactivity

Price:

The Creativa has a recommend retail price of $219.99, however as part of the Amazon.com sale it has a whopping 44% off this making it only $122.99. It’s still quite a lot of money but a huge saving of $97.00 certainly puts it in the price bracket of more people.

Description:

The Creativa is a lovely unit and well priced at the moment. The unit is based around the Melody brewer design but comes with an electronic menu that gives it additional features and a very smart look. For example, saving our preferred settings is a real nice time saver and for us worth the extra few dollars. However it does have some downside too, and for us this would be the water tank could have been a bit bigger, but not a huge issue for us, the thermoblock heating system could do with an upgrade to stronger unit and the adjustable height of the cup platform you do need to be careful with. It feel a little fragile and so setting it with gentle hands is recommended. The Creativa is a machine we can recommend, especially at its current price, and we are sure a unit you would be happy with in your kitchen.
